Artist Spotlight: Bela Jet
Who are you and what do you do?
Hey, hey! I’m Tarra, one of the creative forces behind VanJet Productions. You can catch me as one half of the musical duo Bela Jet, where I sing and play the baritone ukulele. When the sun is up, you'll find me immersed in the world of graphic design, but as an artist, my talents extend far and wide – from illustration and digital creativity to crafting unique pieces with my hands.
Where do you find the most inspiration?
I find inspiration for my art and music throughout my day-to-day life. Sometimes it's the frustration of being stuck in a job I hate. On other occasions it’s enriched by the warmth of a fulfilling life spent with my loving and caring family.
Who/what are your biggest influences?
One of my biggest influences growing up was my grandfather. He introduced me to different genres of music at a young age. He was one of the first people who encouraged me to be unapologetically myself.
What is your go-to album/artist right now?
The last album I played from beginning to end was Beach Goon's 2016 release “Boisad”. I don't necessarily have a go-to at the moment. I'm always looking for new recommendations!
Do you have a favorite artist or piece of art?
For as long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with M.C. Escher's “Eye”.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given, not necessarily related to art?
A line that seems to continuously come up in one variation or another is, “Your fear of looking stupid is holding you back.”
If you had to describe your artistic style in three words, what would they be?
In relation to my art? Dark, nerdy and detailed. In relation to my music? Acoustic, emotional and melodic.
Who would you like to collaborate with?
I would be grateful to collaborate with just about anybody! The chance to bounce ideas and styles around with different artists while pushing creative boundaries is appealing. Cody and I had the opportunity to record a single with Shane Abel this year.
What is a useless talent you possess?
I can touch my tongue to my nose! Also, I still recall dance moves to certain songs from when I used to clog as a child.
What is your comfort food?
PIZZA! I am also a fan of a good diner-style club sandwich.
What is next for you?
I'd like to continue to record my album! A venture into the creative world of painting and other tactile art forms is definitely next. I’d like to attempt to break away from the majority of my work being digital.
What is a question you have for us?
What is one movie you could watch on repeat for an entire day?
